Bending Reality
How are media and manipulation related? Analyzing headlines and media messages teaches how wording influences content perception and public opinion. Students get hands-on experience as fictional editors. The methodology develops critical thinking and sensitivity to the impact of media.
Vzdělávací cíle
- Žáci vysvětlí na příkladech, jak média ovlivňují naše názory a postoje.
- Žáci rozpoznají obsah a záměr mediálních sdělení.
Ověření cílů
- Vyhodnocení rozdílu mezi mediálními zprávami.
- Uvědomění si, že různá média mají odlišný zájem při podávání informací.
Preparation
Evocation

To begin, ask the students:
Do the media always tell us things exactly as they are?
What can influence how a newspaper article is written?
Not Every Headline Is the Same

Modern Technology and Children
Food Prices
After-school activities
With positive or negative headline tones, the topic is presented in a one-sided way that pushes a certain interpretation. Articles with such headlines are more likely to be read by people who already agree with that opinion, and this can strengthen their views. One-sided articles also often do not give space to opposing views or the opposing side of a polarizing topic.
Editors
If students are unfamiliar with the profession of an editor, explain to them that an editor edits and approves texts, including final headlines.
Follow these steps:

1. Factory – examples of possible solutions

2. Influencers – examples of possible solutions

3. Robotization – examples of possible solutions
Discuss with the students:
Was it harder to write a positive, negative, or neutral headline?
How can a headline influence what people think?
Suggesting an opinion is dangerous because it promotes polarization, oversimplification of complex topics, and weakens trust in the media. Quality objective journalism should inform, not persuade.
Reflection

Ask the students:
What surprised you most while working with the headlines?
What techniques do the media use to make us think or feel something?
What will you do if you are not sure whether a news article is objective?
